living small

I came across this post on Apartment Therapy about Matthew Hofmann's airstream. It got me thinking about D's VW Eurovan Pop Top we drove all over the Sierras until it died and we sold it non-running. And our first home we lived in as a married couple, a camper set on blocks with a full size refrigerator outside the front door. We've lived small and really enjoyed it.

Now we own a modest three bedroom house. We have room for guests and entertaining, something we couldn't do before. But every time a Eurovan drives by we have dreams of taking road trips across the country as a family. Growing up, due to my parents' work we were never able to take big vacations and explore the country. I'm curious to hear from those of you who did. What were your favorite memories?

ps...Through Matthew's source list I found a great site, CushionsXpress, and we finally ordered two cushions for a chair I got for a steel at one of our local antique malls. I will show after pictures as soon as we get them in.

Makes me itch to get back to the US and get some shiny new hubcaps for the Scamp and hit the road. Can't wait to click through to Matt's airstream photos. DAMN.

I LOVE that you guys lived in a pop-top for a while! SOOO adorable (albeit cramped at time, in ways most people can't imagine). xoxo!

i always wanted to do a roadtrip in the states, even more so in a caravan with friends. seems like it's a long shot, but hopefully one day I'll be able to do that!

my parents took me in our pea green VW up to Oregon to 'retrace' the Oregon trail because I was obsessed with pioneers and Laura Ingalls Wilder. It was MAGIC. I still get excited when I tear open a Nature Valley granola bar - the smell of them just reminds me of that month, campfires, and reading 'little farmer boy' by torch. Go the small space.

I've always daydreamed about touring in a vw! We certainly did the cross country drive a number of times growing up...never in a van though! I would still LOVE to someday!! I love your blog, Kate!

Hi Kate,

I found your blog on your FB page. We have one son who was born Oct 3, 2010, so our sons are pretty close in age. When I saw this post, I knew I had to write. My parents took me everywhere (and sometimes my nephew went with us too) in an Avion camper. We pulled it behind our van. We headed out west almost every summer from the time I was about in 3rd grade. We would go for 2-3 weeks. We covered a lot of territory, including a lot of the Southern part of Canada. I have great memories of National Parks, hikes, campgrounds, vehicle repairs, etc. My favorite memories are the National Parks. I realize now how blessed/lucky I was to have had the opportunity to go to so many and see what great things this country has to offer at such a young age. Now, I teach English as a New Lang to high school students, many are refugees, and I talk about these awesome places in the U.S. sometimes and wish I could do more than just show them pictures because I know so many people in our country don't have the opportunity to travel. I hope that one day we can take our son to these great places too. We started with the Smokies this year.
