help

We just bought the ERGObaby carrier with infant insert and absolutely LOVE it. It is so comfortable and easy to use. We took it on two hikes last weekend (one lasting 2 hours) and Nelson seemed to enjoy it. At least he slept the whole time.

I plan on doing a ton of walking this spring/summer. I like the idea of using the ERGO as much as possible. Strollers feel too bulky sometimes. Anyway, if I plan on being gone for an extended period of time I will need to carry a few diaper supplies with me. The pockets on the ERGO aren't big enough and lugging a diaper bag isn't a reality. So, I'm thinking a lightweight backpack might be the solution. I've been eying BAGGU's backpack in nutmeg for a long time. But will it feel awkward to have something on my front and back? Should I just scrap the whole idea and not be gone for more than a couple of hours? Does anyone have experience with this or suggestions? Help.

obviously, i cant help you yet.

but i can ask: i did not buy the infant insert cause a friend of ours said she only used the moby till her baby was big enough to use the ergo. now i am confused. i guess it is for longer walks/hikes that we might want that ergo in the first few months?

also, how do you like the baggu backpack? i bought the fjallraven backpack hoping to use it in place of a diaper bag, but it is just too small....

I've used that ergo carrier with my nephew a bit in the past months and it was awesome. I think it is important to keep your core strength up, though because it can get pretty heavy as that baby grows! I have no idea, but I wonder if having something on the back, too could help balance out the muscle work in the body for positive results? I do think perhaps as the baby gets bigger you may even need to switch to the back... hmm. I'm no expert, just thinking out loud.

we have an ergo and we love it! we use it all the time when we travel, and it's so great for that.
when tayvee and i travelled alone, i wore the ergo with a backpack, thinking that it would be the best idea ever! don't have to carry anything or drag a suitcase! but, it's not the best thing. i would recommend finding a backpack with thin straps, because the straps will overlap and that's the most uncomfortable thing. but if you could find a way for the straps to sit side by side, i think that would be ideal. i mean, i say "ideal," but i'm not sure if it would ever be reeeally ideal. even when my backpack was light, i was constantly fiddling with the straps on my shoulders and trying to get them to sit right. it's fine for quick trips to the store, but i definitely don't recommend wearing both for any long period of time. (though maybe your stamina is much better than mine?) i was out of breath after five minutes, panting through the airport, it was horrible.
my one complaint with the ergo - same as you - is that the pockets aren't big enough. it's hard even to carry a purse over your shoulder when you're wearing the ergo, it's so awkward. i end up loading my back pant pockets, and have a lumpy bum everywhere i go. oh well. i also started using a plastic snack baggie to hold a few wet wipes so i didn't have to use one of those bulky (even the travel ones are bulky, it seems) wipes packages. i can squish those and a diaper into the ergo pocket. (and i just keep re-using the baggie.)

either way though, i think that backpack is awesome and you should get it!!

sorry this was a long comment, but i hope it's a little helpful. when i read this post, i was like "ooh! i know about that!" :)

I love the Ergo! My housemate is still using it to cart her almost-two-year-old back and forth to the bus stop every day. I always packed the very minimum and either tucked it in the Ergo or carried a shoulder strap bag. My housemate does the backpack/Ergo combo. She says it gets heavy and uncomfortable but she does it anyway. I hope that's semi-helpful :)

could you get something like the cargo pack? http://www.ergobabycarriers.com/babycarriers/item/CGP001/

i know it is only compatible with the performance series, but i bet you could use a speedy stitcher or frank's industrial sewing machine to attach clips/buckles onto the ERGO that you have.

We have the Moby too, but I might be flying solo soon. Dealing with yards of fabric in the airport/plane sounds pretty intimidating to me. I know people love it, but I'm just not that good at putting it on yet. With the Ergo and newborn insert I can easily put Nelson in it all by myself.

I don't own the Baggu backpack yet. If you click the picture on their site they show you quite a few views. I think it would be big enough for a diaper bag. And the straps seem thin. Whitney's tip of putting wipes in a small ziplock. Genius.

We are using cloth diapers. I'll have to see if I can squeeze one into the zip pocket of the Ergo. My guess is it might be too big.

Maybe I will get the backpack no matter what. We have another diaper bag (skip hop duo deluxe), but the backpack would be nice for when we don't need too much.

Kate - Thanks for the tip on the backpack attachment. It seems like a nice option when the kiddo is on the back.

Thanks for all your tips/thoughts!

this probably isn't for everybody but we use carabiners on our baby pack (it's not an ergo) and hook an extra bag or too for extra space/storage. great for dirty diapers. and if you have some cool cloth bags it doesn't look too tacky :)

used the wrap a few times in the airport and it was a pain.. had to take it off once during security.. HUGE pain.

With the ergo, I would do the backpack in the back, baby on the front thing regularly. It is definitely doable, especially if the backpack goes on second.

Beyond anything, I suggest you take your ideas and run with them. If you think something might work, try it, notice what doesn't quite work, iron out the kinks over time. You will come up with systems that work great!
